THE RESOLUTION: BIG NIGHT, BIG BEAUTY
Sephora Makeup Artist Lawrence Lim spills some of his party tricks.
PRIME FOR PERFECTION
When you know it’s going to be a late night with lots of photographic evidence, there’s no excuse to skip primer. Pick one you know you love—a big night is not a time to road test a new product.
SPARKLE AND SHINE
Nothing says “party” like glitter. Lim’s technique here? “After applying primer and contouring the eye with a neutral shade, I applied a metallic pigment to create a great base,” he says. “Then I applied a liquid glitter liner as an adhesive and packed loose glitter on top of it with a small, flat brush.”
THE DOUBLE LASH
A lot of the lush lashes you see on the red carpet are the result of not one but two sets of false lashes. For the look shown here, Lim glued a half-length falsie on the outer portion of a standard-sized one, then trimmed the whole thing to the width of our model Sahar’s eyes. “It gives it a little more flare,” he says. Here’s how to apply: “Put a little glue on your hand—clear is best for beginners—and let it get tacky. Then, use a liner brush to run the glue across the lash line of the false lashes and affix to the outer corner of the eye, then the inner, then the middle. Hold it there for a few seconds, and voila!”
At a big event, it’s important to have something on your lips, even if your eye makeup is major—you’re doing lots of talking and kissing. “Try adding a little bit of color and see how far you can push it,” advises Lim. “You might be surprised!”
Party makeup-bag musts? Blotting paper, your lipstick, and your lash adhesive. “You could be laughing really hard and your eyes tear up, and then your inside lashes pop off. Don’t be that person!”
Divergent is opening in theatres and IMAX® March 21, 2014.
A friend once coined the term “The Perfect Leave-Behind”—she’d “accidentally” left something at her beau’s apartment so that he would have a reason to invite her back over to retrieve it. The Perfect Leave-Behind was not an impressive, dog-eared paperback, nor was it anything overtly trying-too-hard, like lingerie. No, reader, The Perfect Leave-Behind was a single designer red lipstick, so chic and elegant that the gentleman in question fell head over heels (the duo will be married this year). Whether you’re searching for a Leave-Behind or an “Apply Just After Dinner,” these products are glam enough to fit the bill.

HOURGLASS: AMBIENT BLUSH
Hourglass founder Carisa Janes talks Ambient Light blushes.
If you’ve ever stood under direct track lighting, you know: light sources can dramatically alter your appearance, and not always for the better. That’s why the beauty world is buzzing over the Hourglass Ambient Lighting collection, designed to make you look like you’re always in your best light. Founder Carisa Janes shares the inspiration behind her line’s avant-garde blushes and their complementary brushes. BECKY PEDERSON
Ambient light is such interesting inspiration for a beauty product. From where did you draw it?
CARISA JANES: Growing up, my mother had pink light bulbs in our home, and she used them everywhere because they cast such a flattering glow. Years later this inspired me to create a collection of groundbreaking finishing powders that recreate different flattering light sources. This spring, we extended that idea to blushes.
Your blush is so different from everything else on the market right now.
CJ: We focus on innovation. If we feel there’s something missing from the marketplace or if we’ve discovered a new ingredient or technology, only then do we explore a new product. Ambient Lighting Blush is a completely new take on blush. We combined the lighting effects of Ambient Lighting Powder with an array of bright cheek colors. The result is a product that is truly unique for creating a soft-focus, seamless finish on the skin.
Any tips on choosing a color?
CJ: I admit it’s hard to choose between them. Some clients have even bought them all. Each of the six shades, which range from soft coral to cool pink, can flatter a variety of complexions and are designed to be paired with the powders.
Hourglass is touted as “high performance makeup.” Can you explain what that means?
CJ: It’s about makeup that produces results. For example, we use clinical levels of active ingredients in our foundations so that they deliver benefits to the complexion. All of our products have beautiful textures, rich pigments and unique formulas, effectively improving the user experience.
What do you mean by “clinical levels”?
CJ: Clinical means that we are using the optimal dose of an active ingredient to ensure it is effective. Not many brands can claim that.
Your tastes seem very broad, as your products are both trendy and timeless. What inspires you?
CJ: When we launched in 2004, there were heritage luxury brands and makeup artistry brands, but I felt like there was something missing in terms of innovation in the category. Hourglass reinvents luxury beauty— with a focus on advanced ingredients, modern design and exceptional functionality. It’s the idea of cutting-edge formulas, new textures, and elevated aesthetics that drives me.
